Christianson surfs to second place at Longboard champs

Sam Christiainson competed in the Open Men’s division.

DURBAN North longboard surfer Sam Christianson placed second in the Open Men’s division at this year’s Billabong SA Longboard Championships at Lower Point, Jeffreys Bay.

Jeffreys Bay’s Steven Sawyer took top place with Christianson settling for the silver medal.

It would have taken something special to beat Christianson, who has won the national Longboard Surfing title for the last four years consecutively.

Christianson, who now holds four SA senior titles and a junior SA title, said he was still proud of his achievements.

“I’m really happy with my performance this year. I feel like I surfed a great competition. My surfing got better as the rounds progressed, with the final being my best performance. I’m extremely proud of the whole KZN team. There was a great team vibe this year, and the support was amazing. Seeing Christy work so hard leading up to the SA champs and then winning made me incredibly proud. Hard work pays off,” he said.

Christianson finished 12th across events on last year’s world Longboard Tour.

“That earned me a spot on this year’s tour. My main goal now for this year is to finish in the WSL top five,” he said.

Overall the national championship saw competitors across 17 divisions, from the U14 category to the Over 75 category.

The KwaZulu-Natal team had 43 members competing across all age groups.
