Concern over structural stability of Greenwood Park home
Mark Thompson said he has noticed large cracks forming inside his family home due to damage from a burst pipe earlier this year.
A GREENWOOD Park resident is concerned over the structural integrity of his home after his driveway, perimeter fence, retaining wall and walkway to the house were severely damaged by a burst pipe in March this year.
The burst also severely damaged a section of Hedley Road outside his home which is yet to be reinstated.
Mark Thompson said he has noticed large cracks forming inside his family home, which has stood for the past 60 years, due to water from the burst pipe seeping into his foundation.

“I’m worried about the impact on the property structurally; how it will impact the home’s value; could I potentially be left without a roof over my head if the house is deemed unfit to live in? Where do I go? There are so many scenarios going through my head which had led to countless sleepless nights. I ended up in hospital recently because of a pain in my chest, I thought it was a cardiac arrest but I was told it was muscle-related stress,” he said.
Exacerbating the problem, Thompson said he feels left in the dark as the City is yet to evaluate the structure before beginning repair works to reinstate his wall and road.
“This all started in October last year. Initially there was a pipe burst outside my property and it was repaired. However the road surface had not been repaired. The municipality were almost ready to throw on concrete when on the evening of March 11, another massive burst occurred. The water ran for hours on end and the pressure from that undermined my retaining wall, the walkway, my home, and it compromised my security.”
