Make this weekend a winning one with I Heart Market and Northglen News
I Heart Market and Northglen News are giving away a hamper filled with glorious goodies from traders this Saturday.
DURBAN’S market scene is more than just a place to shop – it’s a showcase of creativity, culture, and community spirit. From handmade treasures to homegrown treats, the city’s markets are pulsing with local talent and stories waiting to be discovered. Markets of the 031 is a new series shining a spotlight on these dynamic spaces and the passionate people behind them.
First up: the beloved I Heart Market, now thriving at Northlands Primary in Durban North on the first Saturday of every month. Originally founded by Anna Savage more than 10 years ago, the market has passed through a few passionate hands, the latest being Evan Roberts, Duncan Bonella and Karla Thring.
What inspired you and your partners to take over the market?
Evan: “The I Heart Market has always been about heart. It’s about people, community, creativity. We wanted to carry that forward, staying true to its values but also reminding people why it matters now more than ever. The curation team’s focus is not just aesthetics but values such as sustainability, locality, empowerment. It’s a space where the Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) that drive the South African economy are given a visible, meaningful platform. That often gets lost in the noise. But here, purpose is everything.”
What challenges have you faced running the market, and how have you overcome them?
Evan: “We are working to ensure people know about the new location. Many people still associate us with our previous venues. Now that we’re in Durban North, we’re pushing to spread the word because once people come, they feel the magic.”
What role does the market play in the local community, and how do you hope it grows in the future?
Evan: “One of the market’s most exciting prospects lies in its potential to inspire the next generation. With families and children in abundance, the market experience often becomes an educational one. In a world where AI and screens dominate, the I Heart Market is a reminder of creativity, craftsmanship, and human connection. We’re even planning a young entrepreneurs’ market in July to give kids a platform to create and sell.”
How do you choose the products or vendors that are part of your market?
Evan: This isn’t just a pop-up market, it’s a curated celebration of small business and local design. Every vendor is handpicked through a rigorous vetting process. We ask a lot of questions. Photos, samples and sometimes even prototypes. We’re strict because it matters.”
What is unique about your market?
Evan: “If you’re looking for handmade, ethically produced, locally designed products that uplift South African creativity, I Heart Market is for you. There are no mass-produced goods, no global retail giants — and absolutely no plastic. It’s a completely plastic-free zone. Even the packaging has to be sustainable.”
