Durban North bus stop gets mural makeover

Colourful murals cover five bus stops across Ward 36.

IN 2022 Enviro Fixers Durban North began an upliftment project involving various roleplayers targeting bus stops in the area.

A dedicated team of volunteers were involved in repainting, the removal of graffiti tags and illegal advertising posts, as well as adding beautiful murals to the bus stops.

The initial project saw four bus stops transformed in the Broadway precinct with colourful murals featuring various butterflies completed by artist Giffy Duminy.

The project also involved The Heart of Durban North, a collective involving local businesses, spearheaded by Kensington SuperSPAR, and the Durban North Conservancy.

Now, a fifth bus stop has been transformed at the entrance to Durban North on Kenneth Kaunda Road (Northway).

Rayne Dancaster of the environmental organisation gave some background into the latest project.

“This bus stop was earmarked for a makeover with the Durban North Conservancy and funds were scarce at the time and we weren’t able to fund it. However Giffy very kindly offered to do this pro-bono and he completely transformed the bus stop. We also hope this will encourage residents and businesses, some of whom already do, to contribute to the work we do in the area.

“The theme for all the bus stops was to include butterflies because they are so beautiful and vibrant, and they create wonder. Butterflies are a sign of a good ecosystem as they are sensitive to environmental changes. We feel this project really uplifts the neighbourhood and I absolutely love the newest work. What sets this mural apart is Giffy used the pole as a stem to the plant the butterfly is sitting on,” she said.

Just across the road from the stop, Enviro Fixers work to replant and rejuvenate a flower bed in collaboration with Chicken Licken. It ties in the work that the group of volunteers carry out in the Durban North area.
