WATCH: Durban exhibition ‘shell’ebrates turtle conservation

The exhibition is visible from both the promenade and the uShaka pier nearby.

A NEW art exhibition highlighting the link between art and conservation has been unveiled on the Durban Promenade.

The Nic Human Art Exhibition, a collaboration between South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) and DUT, showcases nine panels mixed with artwork and information on turtles and addresses the significant threat of plastic pollution to their habitats.

It was unveiled on May 23, World Turtle Day, a day to help people celebrate and protect turtles by raising awareness about the threats they face. The exhibition is visible from both the promenade and the uShaka pier nearby.

SAAMBR communications officer Nikhiel Singh explained that the series of artworks were from Human’s exhibition entitled ‘I Love Turtles’.

“Earlier this year we were invited to DUT to view a series of paintings from DUT alumnus Nic Human. His exhibition formed part of his doctorate. What Durbanites and visitors see here is a mixture of Nic’s own photos and some submitted to him which he used as reference. He spent time at uShaka Sea World studying sea turtles and worked on this series of paintings.

“We felt the positioning of the art panels was especially important as it takes you on a journey of not only the dangers pollution pose to turtles, but also the power we all have to make a change that could potentially save or destroy their marine habitat and their lives. Sea turtles are at risk because of the threat of ocean pollution, especially plastic litter, which we cause. We hope the exhibition will inspire change and encourage people to be in a conservation mindset,” he said.
