Retraction Article: Barrier system replaces shark nets

The Northglen News has issued a full retraction and apology following the publication of an article titled “Barrier system replaces shark nets”.

IT has come to our attention that the article published on 7 July 2025 titled ‘Barrier system replaces shark nets’, which appeared both online and in the Northglen News (weekending, 11 July 2025 – page 2), contained false and misleading information.

After a thorough internal review, we have determined that the story was based on a fabricated press release and a fraudulent website purporting to represent a marine conservation organisation.
It has become clear that we were deliberately misled by a coordinated disinformation effort.

We unreservedly retract the article in full and apologise for the confusion and concern it may have caused, particularly to our readers, the coastal communities of KwaZulu-Natal, and the organisations wrongly associated with the report.

As a publication committed to factual and responsible journalism, we are taking the following actions:
• The article has been marked as fake on all our digital platforms.
• An internal process is under way to review and strengthen our verification protocols.
• We are cooperating with relevant parties to trace the origin of the false information.
• We are also considering legal action against those responsible for this deliberate attempt to mislead both us and our loyal readers.

We take full responsibility for the error and are committed to learning from this incident to uphold the trust our readers place in us.

Sincerely,
The Editorial Team
