Four arrested for uMhlanga cellphone theft

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning on McCausland Crescent.

FOUR suspects allegedly linked to a robbery of a pedestrian on McCausland Crescent in uMhlanga were arrested on Sunday morning (July 13) by members of Marshall Security.

Three suspects approached the pedestrian and robbed her of her phone just after 01:00 while a fourth suspect in a getaway vehicle fled the scene.

“Three suspects fled on foot toward the uMhlanga Promenade, while a white VW Polo had fled the scene as a getaway vehicle,” explained Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell. “A co-ordinated foot search was initiated and three suspects were successfully apprehended in the area after an extensive search and foot chase.

“While questioning the suspects and awaiting the assistance of Durban North SAPS, one suspect revealed that their fourth accomplice, who had driven off in the white VW Polo, had contacted them after running out of fuel near the Virginia/Fairway area. Officers responded to the tip-off, located the vehicle, and immediately apprehended the driver.”

Powell added that the stolen cellphone was not recovered.

“It is believed to have been hidden or disposed of in the nearby bushes; all four suspects were successfully arrested. A formal case was opened by the victim, who positively identified the suspects who were handed over to the SAPS,” he said.
