Durban North church provides fresh space for creativity

The space has already hosted several exhibitions and is a way for amateur artists to showcase their work.

THE Durban North Community Church recently unveiled a gallery space within its premises called Art at @tap gallery which is open to the community.

Situated on Mackeurtan Avenue, the space was curated by members of the congregation and was the brainchild of Nigel Horsfall and his wife Dee.

The space has already hosted several exhibitions and is a way for amateur artists to showcase their work.

“We have the @Tap Coffee Corner shop and we felt the space of the new gallery would be called Art at @tap. For people who might not know @tap is an acronym for ATTAP and that stood for ‘all things to all people’. However, this space is non-denominational and is open to artists from the area as well as a push to get some of our local schools involved,” explained Nigel.

“Some of the first exhibitors were the congregants and since then we’ve held another exhibition as well as art classes during the school holidays. This space has been a long time coming and the idea started with my wife Dee. She had this idea to emulate Art in the Park and get the community involved. I always liked the idea myself and we just built on it to allow a space for amateur artists from all backgrounds to showcase their work,” he said.

Nigel added the spaces around the gallery, including the coffee shop and children’s playing area, were ideal for the community to make use of.
