uMhlanga ratepayers body addresses service-delivery issues with mayor

The engagement covered a range of issues including reckless driving in uMhlanga, stormwater drainage improvements and homelessness.

THE meeting last week between the uMhlanga Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (URRA) and eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba over service delivery issues has been described as ‘fruitful’.

The engagement covered a range of issues, including Metro Police capacity to service the fast-growing precinct, ongoing water leaks, sewerage network challenges, stormwater drainage improvements, and homelessness.

URRA chairperson Terri MacLarty said the City made several promises and committed to addressing some of the issues.

“They promised attention and proposed a workshop with stakeholders to find a solution to the lawlessness being experienced in lower uMhlanga. We also addressed regular traffic violations on the lower end of Umhlanga Rocks Drive (heading towards the village) as well as the noise issues of revving cars, loud, disturbing clubs, and general disrespect of the rules of the road by taxis and super cars. We handed in a petition carrying 550 signatures collected in just three days in an appeal for an increase in resources and service delivery from Metro Police,” she said.

Following the meeting, Metro Police were in attendance on Monday (August 18) outside Umhlanga Manors where traffic violations occur daily.

MacLarty said they also informed municipal officials and the mayor that they would be willing to seek a court interdict to stop any upgrade or construction work on Herrwood Drive.

Last month the City revealed the upgrade was being privately funded and that Herrwood Drive would be upgraded to a four-lane road (two lanes in each direction) with a centre island and sidewalks.

“We will seek an interdict until there is proper consultation with the community. The interdict would not stop the project totally but in order for there to be proper dialogue so that residents can understand what is going on and raise their concerns over the project. The mayor has committed to working with us to resolve the many issues we brought to him, and we look forward to continued discussion,” she said.
