Millions in counterfeit, non-compliant goods seized at Springfield Park

The combined total recovery amounted to more than R2.6m.

DURBAN Metro Police, working alongside SAPS and enforcement partners, seized more than R2.6m worth of counterfeit and non-compliant goods during an intelligence-driven operation across the eThekwini Municipality on Wednesday,  August 20.

The operation targeted hotspots at Springfield’s China Mall and Pinetown, with officers confiscating thousands of fake and unsafe items ranging from clothing to electronics.

According to a statement released by Durban Metro SAPS, a total of 1328 counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R1.2m were seized, including branded clothing, shoes, caps, toys, PlayStations and playing cards.

“Durban Metro Police Service remains committed to protecting communities, safeguarding the economy, and disrupting illegal trade networks,” the statement read.

In addition, authorities removed 19 729 non-compliant products from circulation.

These included meat products, electronic commodities, chemical disinfectants, automotive parts, safety footwear, PPE equipment, and household items such as buckets, mirrors and plastic bags.

The goods, which did not meet National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) standards, carried an estimated value of R1.4m.

The successful operation was the result of collaboration between multiple enforcement units, including Durban Metro Police’s Tracing, K9, and Strike Teams, the SAPS Provincial Drugs and Firearm Unit, Durban POP Unit, KZN and National Counterfeit Units, NRCS officials, brand protectors, and other security stakeholders.
