Durban North resident nets SA head coach position
Calvin Price has previously served as an assistant coach with the SA indoor women’s team as well as assistant coach of the Namibia indoor women’s team.
DURBAN North resident Calvin Price has been named as the new head coach of the SPAR SA Women’s Indoor Hockey Team.
The 34-year-old brings a wealth of experience into the coaching set-up having previously served as an assistant coach with the SA indoor women’s team as well as assistant coach of the Namibia indoor women’s team.
Earlier this year he helped the Southern African country to a top six finish at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Indoor World Cup in Croatia.
The former Northwood School Old Boy is also the director of hockey at Clifton College and the head coach of the IIE’s Varsity College Durban North outdoor men’s team.

Even more impressive is his domestic coaching record which has seen him lead the KZN Raiders women’s indoor team to five inter-provincial titles (IPT) and one runner-up finish.
Speaking on his appointment as head coach, Price simply said it was a dream come true.
“This is a massive honour for me having been in an assistant coaching role for two international teams. Growing up, my dream was to play for South Africa and that dream transitioned from player to coaching. I wouldn’t be where I’m standing without the support of my family and my mentors like Greg White and former SA women’s indoor coach Lenny Botha. They both played a massive role in where I am today and I can’t thank them enough,” he said.
Price will be in charge until the conclusion of the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in 2029.
Speaking to Northglen News last week, Price said the focus had turned to the Nksoi Cup in December.

He has already named a 32-woman High Performance Squad which will assemble for training and selection camps later this year.
“A massive goal for us is to win the Nkosi Cup. It’s been run for two years and SA has never won it. I was fortunate to be part of Namibia’s winning side last year but we want to win our home tournament. There is also an eye to building for the World Cup in four years’ time so the work starts now as we build towards the future. I’m fortunate enough to have a great support system around me and this tournament will be a good litmus test to see where we are at,” he said.
The squad includes a number of familiar faces, including local residents Jess Lardant, Cheree Greyvenstein and Tatum Kroutz, as well as debutant Caprice Bengston.
