Burst leaves Waterkant Road surface in unacceptable state
Residents have voiced their concerns about the inconsistent pace of the project and the poor condition of the road reinstatement.
RESIDENTS have again raised the alarm over the condition of the surface of Waterkant Road after a burst pipe caused significant damage to it.
Of particular concern is a stretch outside the entrance to Hyper by the Sea which is particularly dangerous to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
The road has been part of a pipe replacement project which has been ongoing for more than two years and residents had already voiced their concerns about the inconsistent pace of the project and the poor condition of the road reinstatement.

While the pipe replacement project has been completed, the road resurfacing project has been hampered by heavy rains and flooding.
That, coupled with several bursts, have left the road in an unacceptable condition.
Wayne Audie, a resident on Waterkant Road, said he uses the stretch of road daily and is concerned for his safety.
“I’ve experienced this as a motorist, pedestrian and cyclist. As residents we have been frustrated by how long the project has taken but also how long it has taken to rehabilitate this road surface. The pothole from the latest burst affects both lanes and you find drivers having to drive around almost in an S shape. If you aren’t aware of this and driving along this stretch at night you can seriously damage your rim and tyres. As a pedestrian I feel at risk because some drivers either drive closer to the fence on the M4 or drive in the opposite lane which is also dangerous. We aren’t asking for a lot, just for the road resurfacing project to be completed,” he said.
Ward 36 councillor Heinz de Boer said he understood residents’ frustrations and said he had been given a commitment that this section of road would be prioritised.
