Greenwood Park and Durban North CPFs on alert as talks over taxi strike continue

There were no major blockades on any routes going in and out of the area on Thursday morning.

AS meetings continue between the eThekwini Municipality and the eThekwini Metro Taxi Council over an ongoing taxi strike, the Greenwood Park and Durban North CPFs said they are on high alert monitoring the situation.

Both CPFs have said there is no indications the strike will lead to any blockades on major routes.

Darryl Oliver, public relations officer for the Durban North CPF, said they had engaged with security partners as well as the SAPS and Metro Police on the matter.

“We are monitoring the situation and we ask that residents monitor their local traffic or security groups for updates on the roads. We also ask that they rely on information from verifiable sources including their Ward councillors,” he said.

While it was announced the taxi strike would affect Thursday (September 4) and Friday, September 5, the mayor and officials from the taxi council are meeting to resolve the issue.

On Thursday morning the City held a meeting which it said was “aimed at resolving long-standing tensions” within the taxi sector.

“All parties acknowledged the legitimacy of the concerns raised by the taxi industry and committed to swift, collaborative action. Chief among these concerns was the backlog in issuing operating licences. The Municipality, in partnership with the KZN Department of Transport, pledged to expedite the licensing process. In the interest of public safety and service continuity, Mayor Xaba and KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma have appealed to taxi leadership to suspend the planned strike and resume operations,” the City said in a statement.
