uMdloti resident excited after SA indoor hockey management appointment

Robyn Wiggett has represented South Africa in masters hockey and also served as the manager of the successful KZN Raiders indoor women's team.

ROBYN Wiggett’s hockey pedigree is unquestioned when it comes to playing, but that is also true for her organisational skills.

The uMdloti resident has represented South Africa in hockey at U21 level and represented the national masters team in her 50s.

She has served as the manager of the successful KZN Raiders indoor women’s team and also served as the SA women’s indoor team manager for one international series.

Now the 57-year-old has been named as the manager of the SA men’s indoor hockey team until 2029.

That role involves managing team finances, arranging travel and events, and co-ordinating with players and coaching staff, a job she feels confident she can do.

“I feel I can add value to the team in terms of structures. Working with both the players and the staff is something I’m confident I can do,” Wiggett explained.

Speaking on her appointment, Wiggett said she is keen to alleviate the players’ financial burden.

“I was on holiday in Türkiye when I got the call and I didn’t think that I would be in the role for the national squad. It’s an honour to be named as manager because it’s a role I served as for the women’s team three years ago. The men’s team have also performed exceptionally well at the recent World Cup and I would love to see them gain more international exposure.

“One of my key focus points now is securing sponsorships and assisting the South African Hockey Association. At the end of the day I feel I can add value to the team if I can get the players not to have to pay copious amounts of money to attend camps and overseas tours,” she said.

It is a busy period for Wiggett, who still actively plays for the Berea Rovers first team and who has one eye on making the final cut to play in her third Masters Hockey World Cup next year.

She is also the current deputy head of sport and marketing at Virginia Preparatory School.
