Mphahlele and Xaba win Boxer Super Run in Durban

Ryan Mphahlele is now the fastest South African on African soil, while setting a new event course record.

IT was a debut to remember for Ryan Mphahlele after he won the elite men’s race at the the third annual 5km Boxer Super Run in Durban on Sunday.

Mphahlele crossed the finish line in 13:37, meaning he is the fastest South African on African soil, while setting a new event course record.

In the elite women’s race, Glenrose Xaba emerged victorious in a time of 15:27.

It was her second Boxer Super Run after winning the inaugural event in 2023 in a time of 16:03.

In all a record field of 5000 runners lined up for the start at Snell Parade, near Blue Lagoon Park.

Speaking after the race, Mphahlele gave some background to his mindset.

“The last time that I ran a 5km was two years ago,” he said. “The opportunity came, especially in Durban, it’s a coastal area, so I thought let me come and top it. It was like a fitness run to me, to see where my fitness is at this time of the year. I’ve got a couple of races that are premeditated. It was good to see where I am at.”
Rounding off the elite men’s podium was Kabelo Mulaudzi, who came in second, and Elroy Gelant who finished third.

Elite women’s race winner Xaba had a tough race against the 2024 winner Karabo More and Tayla Kavanagh.

“I’m very happy about the win, and with the competition from Karabo More and Tayla Kavanagh. Well done to them. It was a good race. I went with the strategy of my coach, just sit behind, but when you take the move take it and don’t think about your training partner (referring to More), she will follow. It feels good to be back and to be on the podium. There’s a lot that I enjoy about the Boxer Super Run. The support and atmosphere are great, and we can network with the fans and supporters. It’s my second home here, so it is nice to run at home again.”
More finished second, while Kavanagh finished third.
