Residents urged to store water as shutdown to Northern Aqueduct looms

Repair work will commence at midnight on Tuesday, October 14 and is anticipated to be completed by Wednesday, morning.

WARD councillors Heinz de Boer and Bradley Singh have encouraged residents and businesses to store water following the announcement that the Northern Aqueduct will be shut down at midnight (October 14).

The aqueduct supplies water to the northern areas of eThekwini, including Durban North and uMhlanga.

According to the eThekwini Municipality the emergency shutdown was due to a major leak in the vicinity of Piesang river, in Mount Moriah.

“The City’s Water Service department discovered several leaks on the pipeline, which supplies water to Phoenix 1 and 6 reservoirs.  To safely execute repair work, the operations teams will isolate supply onto the Northern Aqueduct. Consumers are encouraged to reduce their consumption and use water sparingly to minimise the depletion of reservoirs, which will result in the interruption of water supply,” the city said in a statement.

Repair work will commence at midnight and is anticipated to be completed by Wednesday (October 15) morning.

“I encourage residents to store water now, both for drinking and bathing. We anticipate this shutdown to be very disruptive as it could affect the reservoirs in the area,” De Boer said.
