Iconic theatre work (Friday, October 17)

The Actor’s Studio adjacent to the Courtyard Theatre at DUT plays host to Neil Coppen’s Tin Bucket Drum.

Tin Bucket Drum, directed by Bryan Hiles and featuring Mpilo Nzimande alongside Naledi Award-winner Cara Roberts, blends magical realism, shadow puppetry, Kabuki theatre, and live percussion.

Coppen’s lyrical script reimagines African storytelling traditions in an allegorical tale of oppression and liberation. Through evocative lighting and sound, a single narrator conjures a multitude of characters, offering timeless lessons for diverse audiences.

Production honours playwright [Friday, October 17]

The Durban University of Technology’s Department of Drama and Production Studies proudly presents Gibson Kente’s Too Late at The Courtyard Theatre on Friday, October 17 at 18:00.

DUT revives and reimagines Kente’s Too Late as part of its curriculum, presented as a second-year performance techniques production.

This staging honours Kente’s golden-era contribution to South African theatre.

The play embodies what Kente termed “angry theatre”, a balance between cultural sympathy and defiant critique of apartheid.

Take a guided walk through reserve [Saturday, October 18]

The North Durban Honorary Officers will host their next Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve open morning on Saturday, October 18 from 08:00 until 13:00.

There will be guided tours with the officers on the day.

Honorary officer Terry Goulding said entrance is free and that there is also a bird walk that starts at 08:15 sharp.

“Bookings can be done on the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve Facebook and Instagram pages. There will also be a number of indigenous plants on sale which were propagated at the reserve nursery.”

Lace up for fundraiser race [Saturday, October 18]

A 5km fun run in aid of the Umduduzi-Hospice Care for Children will take place at Sandy Centre, 174 Josiah Gumede Road, Pinetown on Saturday, October 18. The race will start at 07:00 and registration kicks off from 06:00.

Umduduzi- Hospice Care for Children is an NPO dedicated to providing free palliative care to children with life-threatening or life-limiting illness.

It was founded in 2012 by Tracey Brand and Dr. Julia Ambler. Its name Umduduzi means ‘The comforter’ in isiZulu, reflecting its mission to bring comfort and dignity to children and their families.

International pianist to delight Durbanites [Sunday, October 19]

Nino Tkeshelashvili, an award-winning pianist, will perform at the Durban Jewish Centre (North Beach) on Sunday, October 19.

Tkeshelashvili began her pianistic studies in Tbilisi, at the Central Music School at the age of six. Her orchestral debut was at the age of seven and she went on to win numerous prizes at international competitions in the years that followed.

Since 2021, she has been continuing her education (Bachelor) at the Münster University of Music.

She will perform a programme of Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt.

Tickets cost R150 at the door.

Tribute show to timeless music [Saturday and Sunday, October 18 & 19]

The Good Trouble Blues turn their focus to the guitar that defined the sound of generations; the Fender Stratocaster.

Since the 1950s, the Strat has been more than just wood and strings.

Its tone and style have carried the voices of legends which has reshaped rock, blues, and beyond.

The Super Strat Show is a tribute to those masters and to the timeless instrument itself. It’s a night that celebrates the songs, the soul, and the spirit of the Stratocaster, brought to life on stage by Good Trouble.

Good to know

  • The shows take place at The Rhumbelow Theatre, Cunningham Road on Saturday, October 18 at 19:30 and Sunday, October 19 at 14:00.
  • There is limited secure parking available and all seats are allocated by the theatre management.
  • Bring food picnic baskets or buy food at the venue. No alcohol may be brought onto the premises.
  • The theatre opens 90 minutes before the show and the venue is wheelchair-friendly.
