Reckless driving and speeding a concern in uMhlanga
Concerns over reckless driving, noise disturbances, nuisance vehicles disrupting residential and commercial areas have been raised at a community imbizo as well as at a meeting with the city.
AN incident of a motorist doing several donuts at the intersections of Lighthouse Road and Ridge Road and at Umhlanga Rocks Drive and Westridge Road on Monday night has prompted calls for stricter enforcement.
For months, residents have raised concerns over what they refer to as the ‘lawlessness’ in the area, including reckless driving and motorists doing donuts in the area.

Other issues raised at community meetings included noise disturbances, nuisance vehicles disrupting residential and commercial areas, unlicensed public transport operations and alleged drug dealing.

This all came to a head after a recent meeting between the uMhlanga Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (URRA) and eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba last week.
The meeting was also attended by various roleplayers in the area including metro police.
Duncan Heafield, deputy chairperson of the uMhlanga ratepayers body explained that they were appreciative of the support from metro police and SAPS which has already begun.
“At the meeting Mayor Xaba pledged to ensure increased police visibility and enforcement of by-laws in the area. We have seen that commitment from both metro police and the SAPS, however this latest incident was done after hours when there was no presence. Reckless driving and doing donuts was a matter raised at the recent crime imbizo and in the latest incident, authorities have identified the driver and vehicle involved.

“We are experiencing a severe reduction in our home values as a result of revving cars and general disrespect of the rules of the road. The recent fatal accident involving a cyclist and a vehicle on Umhlanga Rocks Drive again highlights the need for more enforcement. We have no problem with people enjoying themselves, as long as they do so within the ambit of the law,” he said.
