M4 set to close for mass participation cycle event
The mass participation cycle event is non-timed and is open to families, casual riders, and seasoned cyclists.
THE M4 Ruth First Highway will be closed to traffic from 05:00 to 09:00 in both directions (north and southbound) on Sunday, October 26.
It’s all part of an exciting initiative under Cycle Sunday, presented by Cycle Lab and Peschl Sports, owned by local resident Shaun Peschl.
This first-of-its-kind event invites cyclists of all ages and skill levels to enjoy a safe, traffic-free ride from Moses Mabhida Stadium to Portland Drive, uMhlanga.
The mass participation cycle event is non-timed and cyclists can join Cycle Sunday from any on-ramp along the M4, as there’s no fixed start or finish line.

Cycle Sunday is non-competitive and perfect for families, casual riders, and seasoned cyclists.
For just R50 participants can ride as much as they like during the four-hour window.
“This cycle event is not meant to be a race, but rather an activation and a celebration of cycling,” explained Peschl. “We’re pioneering something truly special in South Africa, closing off a major freeway purely for recreational cycling. The goal is to make cycling accessible, affordable, and enjoyable for everyone. It’s about getting families, friends, and communities on their bikes and experiencing Durban together in a completely new way.”
Cyclists will need a 24-inch bike or larger, a helmet, and a valid entry pass.

A Kids Festival will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium lawn, featuring fun courses, music, food, and a Marvel Bike Race for children aged 12 and under with bikes 20 inches or smaller.
After the ride, the fun continues on the Moses Mabhida lawn from 09:00 to 13:00, where riders can enjoy entertainment, safety talks, and post-ride festivities.
The initiative is hosted in partnership with the eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) and Go!Durban.
