VIDEO: Skabenga statue unveiled at The Oyster Box

Sculptor Sarah Richards was commissioned to create the statue of the beloved cat.

THE Oyster Box paid tribute to Skabenga on Tuesday with a high tea in his honour while also unveiling a bronze statue of him.

The tabby cat died in March this year after celebrating his 19th birthday and Tuesday’s aide-memoire was dedicated to the life of Skabenga.

He had been a permanent resident at the famed hotel for several years after wandering onto the property as a stray.

To honour the beloved cat’s memory, KwaZulu-Natal artist and sculptor Sarah Richards was commissioned to create a life-size bronze statue of him.

Known for her detailed bronze wildlife sculptures, Richards began the creative process in her KZN Midlands studio, working closely with Oyster Box staff who had known Skabenga best.

“Today, we proudly unveil Skabenga’s statue as a lasting symbol of the special place he holds in so many hearts,” said Philisiwe Gumede, general manager of The Oyster Box.

The base of the statue, once attached, features a QR code, allowing visitors to make direct contributions to the work of the Durban & Coast SPCA, ensuring that Skabenga’s legacy continues to make a positive difference.

Those attending the event were also encouraged to bring dog or cat food for his less fortunate furry friends, that will be donated to various animal charities.
