Volunteers spread kindness at sandwich drive

The sandwich drive formed part of The Robin Hood Foundation's Sarmie Armie initiative.

THE Robin Hood Foundation together with volunteers from Pam Golding and Araujo Attorneys came together at Northwood Crusaders Sports Club last week to make close to 1 000 peanut butter sandwiches for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

This formed part of the foundation’s Sarmie Armie sandwich drive initiative. Every second week volunteers unite to spread love by making sandwiches that go directly to schools, crèches, shelters, and soup kitchens across Durban.

Founder and chairperson of the foundation, Cindy Norcott, explained how the sandwich drive makes a world of difference to the communities they serve.

“We’ve always had a great network of volunteers and many of our initiatives have been held in the Highway area. This time around we wanted to extend that to the Durban North area and this was our first Sarmie Armie drive in the area. This is a great way to connect and build friendships, all the while making a difference for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. During the pandemic we began the Chicken Stew For The Soul initiative where we cooked thousands of kilograms of hearty soup for communities in need.

“As the need grew we moved to making sandwiches for various schools, crèches, shelters, and soup kitchens. People might not realise but the sandwiches we make are sometimes the only meal some children have on that day. We get the principals arriving saying their attendance register is full on the day the sarmies are made which is heartbreaking. That is what makes this initiative all the more important,” she said.

Norcott also thanked Araujo Attorneys for their support and said they’ve consistently supported the NPO for several years.
