KZN number plate deadline draws closer

The KZN Department of Transport has confirmed that after Sunday, November 30, the old-style number plates will be invalid.

WITH just under a week to go, motorists are being asked to ensure they switch to the new number plate system.

The KZN Department of Transport has confirmed that after Sunday, November 30, the old-style number plates (e.g ND, NP, NPS etc.) will be invalid and motorists could be fined.

“We urge motorists to ensure transition early to avoid congestion closer to the deadline,” advised MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma.

The new licence numbering system came into effect on December 1, 2023 with all number plates in the province ending in ZN.

At the time the department said the number plates will not depict the towns and demarcation, but will instead have a continuous numbering system.

The changes to the new licence numbering system were prompted by some towns running out of numbers.

“The operationalisation and commencement of the new numbering system also follows a number of consultations with various stakeholders, including the Road Traffic Management Corporation, South African Bureau of Standards , and manufactures of blank number plates,” the department said at the time.
