Effingham business robbery foiled by law enforcement

Law enforcement recovered stolen items from the tuck shop after the suspects crashed into a curb in their attempt to get away.

A BUSINESS robbery was foiled on Saturday night (November 22) in Effingham after Greenwood Park police and Marshall Security disrupted a gang of suspects as they loaded stolen goods into their getaway vehicle.

The incident occurred at about 19:49.

“We received an urgent call for assistance from a member of the public reporting a business robbery in progress at a well known tuck shop on Effingham Road. Our officers and Greenwood Park SAPS arrived at the shop, disrupting the suspects as they loaded stolen goods into a white VW Polo,” explained Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

“The situation escalated when one of the suspects aimed a firearm directly at our responding officers. Our officers acted in self-defence and fired towards the suspects, forcing the suspects to abandon their attempt and flee the scene with their vehicle. A high-speed pursuit ensued during which the suspects’ getaway vehicle crashed into a curb at the corners of Effingham Road and Corobrick Road.”

The suspects fled on foot and despite an extensive area search, the suspects evaded arrest.

“Their vehicle, a VW Polo, along with a substantial amount of stolen goods, was recovered. According to a traumatised employee at the tuck shop, the suspects demanded cash during the robbery and became aggressive upon discovering that there was a low amount of cash in the till. The suspects then began clearing shelves before they were disrupted,” Powell said.

All recovered items and the abandoned vehicle were handed over to Greenwood Park SAPS for further investigation.
