Youngsters from Riverside Harriers triumph in club time trials

The Riverside Harriers Athletics Club recently won the Durban Mixed Time Trial League Junior Men trophy.

THE Riverside Harriers Athletics Club recently won the Durban Mixed Time Trial League Junior Men trophy.

This is a remarkable achievement because the team finished fourth in last year’s standings.

To win the league, which is based on a points system, a team’s four fastest times are counted over 10 time trials varying between 4km and 5km.

Team captain Matthew Quinton won the Junior Men individual trophy for consistently producing the fastest times over the season which began in February and ended in November.

Some of the seven-man team spoke to Northglen News about their achievements, and one thing was clear, their triumph was a team effort.

“At the beginning of the season we spoke about our team goal and my dad, who is also a part of the club, encouraged us to go for it. While I’m over the moon about being awarded the top junior, the team achievement was a bigger celebration for me as we all contributed to the trophy win.

“Our biggest rival throughout the season was Westville Athletics Club juniors and they made the time trials that much more competitive. I’m really proud of our team and everything we’ve achieved,” Matthew said.

Fellow team member Oliver Bray also lauded the team’s efforts.

“One of the biggest lessons for me this season was teamwork. Our team really weren’t focused on individual records but about doing the best we could for each other,” he said.

Another club member, Zac Visser said they would be defending the trophy next year.

“Some of the team members said they want to continue training over the festive season, including our team captain Matthew. I’m aiming to up my mileage and do a little more training in anticipation for next year’s league. Our goal as a group is to defend this trophy,” he said.

  • The club also aims to attract junior girls and to field a team for 2026 and ultimately take both the Junior men’s and women’s titles next season. To find out more or to join email: riversideharriers@gmail.com.
