“It was established that a 17-year-old, who had been swimming with friends, had gotten into difficulty in the water. The male was swiftly rescued and brought onto the beach, where medics were immediately alerted,” explained KZN VIP spokesperson Gareth Naidoo.

“At the time, the patient was unresponsive. KZNVIP Medics, working alongside Netcare 911, initiated advanced life-saving interventions and successfully resuscitated the patient. Following stabilisation on scene, the patient was transported to a medical facility for further treatment,” he said.

This is the second drowning incident along the KZN north coast following the death of another teenager, who  drowned in an incident in uMdloti on December 17.

The 17-year-old was with two other friends swimming in the area when they got into difficulty.

Two boys, aged 18 and 19, were rescued from the water by eThekwini lifeguards while the third boy was swept away in a rip current.

Despite search and rescue efforts, rescue personnel were unable to find his body on the day.

His body washed up and was recovered on the same beach a day later.
