Local attorney rewards officer for saving boy’s life

Umesh Jivan said he felt compelled to reward Ntokozo Sambo for his act of bravery in saving a young boy's life.

AN uMhlanga attorney has rewarded a Marshall Security officer who helped save the life of a six-year-old boy in a non-fatal drowning in uMhlanga.

Umesh Jivan of Jivan & Co. Inc. said he felt compelled to reward Ntokozo ‘Happy’ Sambo, who responded to the cry of help at a complex on Lagoon Drive on November 21.

Not even being shocked by the electric fencing three times could stop the 22-year-old who helped perform CPR on the boy.

The youngster from Gauteng was on holiday with his family at the time of the incident.

“The bravery Ntokozo showed and the way he responded to the call for help really motivated me to reward his bravery. Not only did he jump over a wall, get shocked, but he also initiated CPR. He is our hero and reading his story was just incredible,” Jivan said.

Sambo was rewarded with a perfume, a letter of commendation and a cash reward.

“This just made my day. I didn’t expect to be rewarded at all as my only thought was about saving the young boy. It is a beautiful gesture from Mr Jivan and I appreciate him for doing that,” he said.

He also recounted how after administering CPR, he was relieved when the young boy opened his eyes.

“It was quite emotional watching the paramedics and lifesavers work on him when they arrived. It reminded me of my mother’s passing. My mother needed someone to react as quickly as I did when she passed. When the little boy’s eyes opened I laid a hand on him and said a prayer of thanks. I just believe that was my good deed for the day, it was not about credit but saving his life,” he said.
