Durban SPCA takes in over 100 animals over festive season
While there were no serious incidents to report on New Year's day there are a number of lost pets still unclaimed.
BETWEEN December 24 and January 3, more than 100 animals were taken in by the Durban & Coast SPCA.
According to the association the animals were a mixture of stray and unwanted cats, kittens, dogs and puppies.
There were no fireworks-related injuries to report on New Year.
Tanya Fleischer, marketing manager of the Durban & Coast SPCA, also appealed to residents to reclaim their pets which were taken in during the same period.

“We have received 17 reports of lost pets and to date only three animals have been claimed by their owners. Others are still waiting for their owners or are waiting for new homes. If you have lost your pet, please visit us to check if your pet is here or call the kennels department during office hours (Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00, and Saturday 08:00 until 12:30) to complete a lost pet report on 031 579 6524/6,” she said.
Fleischer also encouraged residents to get their pets microchipped.
Overall during December, the SPCA’s Inspectorate received more than 430 calls for collections of stray and unwanted animals and over 930 calls to action for complaints, follow ups, rescues, proactive checks and pre-home checks.
