Investigation into human remains washed up on Virginia Beach
Police have opened an inquest after skeletal remains were found on Virginia Beach, with investigations underway.
AN inquest docket has been opened after a body washed up on Virginia Beach on Wednesday (January 7).
The skeletal remains were first spotted by fishermen on the pier at the beach who called for help.
Marshall Security’s Andreas Mathios said their Special Operations Team (SOT) together with SAPS Search and Rescue as well as other responders arrived on scene.

“One of the members had to go into the water close to the shorebreak to retrieve the body. The body was down to just a skeleton with no identifying markers or organs. We suspect the body may have been in the water for a while,” he said.
Mathios added that the remains could be a male.
Earlier this week, rescuers also recovered the human remains of another body, this time at Pennington Beach on the KZN south coast.
It is unclear if the body is linked to a mass drowning incident at the beach involving seven people on New Year’s Day.
According to the NSRI three men, all believed to be aged 21, remain missing.
Thus far, three other bodies linked to the mass drowning have been recovered.
