Local resident steps in to clean up Red Hill post office

Vaughn Williams, together with the help of his gardener Brian Nxumalo, tackled the outside of the post office.

THE Red Hill Post Office was given some much-needed attention over the festive season when a resident stepped forward in the hope of instilling civic pride at the municipal building.

Vaughn Williams, together with the help of his gardener Brian Nxumalo, tackled the outside of the building, including the parking lot, to remove alien invasive plants and weeds growing through the pavement.

The pavement outside the post office was also given a scrub and the drains around the post office were unclogged and cleaned up.

The initiative was encouraged by Ellysa Entwistle from Enviro Fixers Durban North.

The hope now is to continue projects in the space to combat illegal graffiti tags, clean out the gutters, and help keep the area outside the post office and perimeter of the property clean with monthly clean-ups.

“I had approached the post office to propose the project and they were on board and I got chatting to Ellysa from Enviro Fixers who encouraged me to take ownership of this initiative. This post office is such a vital part of the community and sadly it is a neglected space as the weeds had overgrown and taken over. I think this project will benefit the community and we hope to make it an ongoing one,” Williams said.

“It is important that we instill some civic pride to the area. Brian spent the day cleaning up what needed to be done and I hope to make it a regular feature. I’m also appealing to other members of the community to come on board and chip in if they’d like.”

Williams encouraged residents interested in helping out to consider donating black bags, paint, cleaning liquids or other material to help maintain the project.
