MEC welcomes conviction of drunk drivers in uMhlanga

Blood test results are aiding law enforcement to successfully prosecute motorists arrested for drunk driving.

THE MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has welcomed the conviction of motorists who were arrested in September last year for drunk driving in uMhlanga.

Duma said working with the SAPS, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJCD), Durban Metro Police Service and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) produced a number of successful convictions.

“Since August 15, 2025, we have arrested more than 4 400 motorists for drunk driving through the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation. Blood test results are returning positive, and this is crucial evidence for a successful prosecution,” explained Ndabezinhle Sibiya, the spokesperson for the MEC.

Speaking on the operation last year in uMhlanga where 24 motorists were arrested, Sibiya said a number of motorists had already been found guilty.

On their Facebook page they also named one of the drivers who was prosecuted and convicted on February 2.

“We will be releasing more names and information as we move forward.”

There have been a number of operations in and around the village since last year with the most recent roadblock netting 45 drunk drivers.

In that operation, one of the drivers arrested in the roadblock was almost three times over the legal limit.
