VIDEO: Feel-good Friday – officer praised for kindness

Durban Metro Police officer Nokuthula Sikhonde goes viral for her heartwarming dedication to helping schoolchildren cross busy roads safely.

A Durban Metro Police officer has captured the hearts of social media users after a video showing her on duty along the Queen Nandi Drive intersection went viral this week.

The clip, shared by Durban resident Siziwe Maphumulo, shows the officer enthusiastically helping schoolchildren cross the busy road during the morning rush. But it’s not just her efficiency that has people talking — it’s her warmth, humour and genuine love for the children she protects every day.

“I don’t know the Metro Police officer, but I just love her,” Maphumulo wrote.

“I always watch her in the morning at Queen Nandi Drive. You can tell she loves her job. She is always happy, making jokes. She loves school kids. She’ll go across to fetch and escort them. It’s usually high school children and she motivates them to study hard.”

The post quickly gained traction, with dozens of residents sharing similar stories of their own encounters with the officer.

Ziningi Zulu said she once saw the officer stop a group of schoolboys to gently correct their untidy uniforms, offering them a small lecture about presenting themselves properly. “They fixed themselves and dressed neatly,” she recalled.

Another resident, Colleen Mngoma, shared a touching moment she witnessed. She said she saw the officer walk a young boy safely across the road before taking money from her own pocket and giving it to him for lunch.

“I was so touched by the act of a sister,” Mngoma wrote. “Indeed there are people who are still kind.”

Residents from Avoca Hills and surrounding areas described her as “pleasant,” “dedicated,” and “making a difference”.

When tagged in the post, the officer — Nokuthula Sikhonde — responded with heartfelt gratitude. Her words reflect the same sincerity that residents see each morning — not just a law enforcement officer doing her duty, but a caring figure who treats every child like her own.

“Thank you so much,” she wrote. “My friends (learners) know me well on the street. They fix themselves and come dressed well. I stop the cars and cross them. Stop and let the learners pass. I say don’t run, you will fall and get hurt.”
