CANSA calls on Durbanites to ‘be courageous’ at Shavathon events
CANSA will host its annual Shavathon at selected Durban malls on February 28, inviting residents to shave or spray their hair.
FROM a young age, many people are taught that their hair is their “crown” — a powerful symbol of identity, culture and self-expression. Recognising the deep emotional significance of hair across communities, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is once again inviting South Africans to shave or spray their hair in solidarity with those affected by cancer.
CANSA’s annual Shavathon campaign will take place at selected malls in Durban on February 28 under the banner “Be Courageous”.
The malls are The Pavilion, Pick n Pay Hyper By The Sea, La Lucia Mall and Chatsworth Centre.
In addition to mall activations, community, school, family and workplace Shavathons may be hosted throughout the year, extending the campaign’s reach beyond the national weekend.
Participants are encouraged to make a donation of R50 per adult and R25 per child under 12 to take part. Limited-edition CANSA headwear will be available for R60 per item, while stocks last. Those donating 25cm or longer of hair will receive certificates of appreciation in recognition of their contribution.
Makoma Raolane, CANSA’s national sustainability manager, said hair loss remains one of the most visible and emotionally challenging side-effects of cancer treatment.
“For people facing cancer, the loss of their hair is often emotional and difficult. It can affect confidence, dignity, and overall well-being. Our Shavathon was created to show those affected by cancer that they are not alone — every snip, every spray, and every donation sends a powerful message of compassion and support,” Raolane said.
As CANSA marks 95 years of supporting South Africans impacted by cancer, the organisation reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that no one faces a diagnosis in isolation. Funds raised through Shavathon directly support patient care and support programmes, cancer education and awareness initiatives, screening services, and CANSA Care Homes that provide accommodation for patients travelling far from treatment centres.
