Themed Community Journalism in a Digital Landscape, the seminar provided a valuable platform for journalists to strengthen their skills, engage with industry experts, and explore the evolving role of community media in the digital age.

“We were thrilled to be part of this conference because as newsrooms continue to evolve, visual journalism is no longer optional. It has become central to how we tell stories, engage readers or viewers,” said Corrinne Louw, group editor at Caxton Durban.

“It also shapes how our community newspapers remain relevant in a fast-paced digital landscape. Our challenge now is to ensure we retain our hyper local exclusivity in a journalism world where everyone has a smart phone and everyone wants to be a journalist. Our upper hand remains that our journalists are qualified and are exposed to opportunities like these that are invaluable in equipping community journalists with skills needed to adapt, innovate, and continue serving our readers effectively,” she added.

Equipping journalists with modern storytelling skills, FCJ convenor of judges and Akademia senior lecturer, Dr André Gouws, shared insights on multimedia reporting in his talk entitled The Multimedia Journalist: Telling Stories in a Visual World.

A presentation prepared by award-winning photojournalist Wayne Thomas was also shared and discussed, highlighting the importance of strong visual storytelling in his presentation entitled Through the Lens: The Power of Visual Journalism.
