Two security guards shot after robbery at Gateway store

The suspects were allegedly armed with assault rifles and opened fire on officers responding to the robbery at a jewellery store.

ARMED robbers have shot and injured two officers from a private security company following a robbery at Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Sunday afternoon (April 12).

Messages and videos have been circulating on social media showing the aftermath of the shooting.

According to initial reports, five suspects armed with assault rifles robbed Premji’s Jewellers store in the busy mall.

The suspects then opened fire on responding officers at the scene before escaping.

Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), said they were inundated with calls from frantic shoppers requesting assistance after reports of gunshots being fired.

According to Balram, as the suspects attempted to flee, they opened fire with rifles on an armed response officer from a private security company who was entering the mall in his vehicle in response to the incident.

“The officer was struck during the exchange. Several shoppers sought refuge inside nearby businesses as the incident unfolded,” he said.

Following the incident, management of Gateway Theatre of Shopping confirmed the incident had occurred.

“The safety and security of tenants, shoppers and staff remain Gateway Theatre of Shopping’s highest priority, and the centre will continue to work closely with law enforcement and private security partners to uphold proactive security measures,” a statement read.
