Community urged to support knitathon in Durban North

The aim of the knitathon is to crochet, knit or donate as many items for the Bulwer community in the foothills of the Berg.

EVERY year St Martin’s Church plays host to the annual Knitathon event, aimed at helping others in need.

The event is part of the Bulwer Outreach programme which sees members of the church, as well as the community in Durban North, knit and crochet hundreds of items, including clothes, beanies and blankets for the community of Bulwer, in the foothills of the Drakensberg, specifically for winter.

The aim of the knitathon is to crochet, knit or donate as many items, including beanies, baby items, jerseys and blankets, for the Bulwer community who often face the harsh winters with very little.

Sharon Liebetrau, the co-ordinator for the event, said preparations are well underway for this year’s event and encouraged residents to support the upcoming event.

“The important thing is this event is open to everyone in the community. It is really special because our church members and local community come together to work on knitting or crocheting items that will make a difference in the lives of others less fortunate than ourselves. If you don’t know how to knit or crochet we will teach you. We will have a few spare knitting needles and wool for people to use. We are also encouraging the community who have wool to donate, or squares to complete to get in touch,” she said.

Liebetrau added that community members participating can stay for however long they want as there is no prescribed time.

“In the past we’ve also had community members come drop off items on the day. I’ve also had incredible support already from some of the residents and retirement villages who’ve donated to the cause,” she said.

  • This year’s Knitathon will be held at St Martin’s Church, 12 Chelsea Drive, Durban North, on Saturday, May 9, between 09:00 and 16:00. The event will take place on the open patio/courtyard between the church and hall. For those who can’t make Saturday and have items to donate they are welcome to drop them at the Church office (Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 12:30).
