The foundation, which has already fulfilled 95 dreams in 2026, continues to create unforgettable experiences for young “dreamers” — from trolley dashes at Toys R Us Gateway to special outings like beach picnics and visits to uShaka Marine World.

Many of these dreams include electronic devices such as laptops and cellphones, helping children stay connected to the outside world during extended hospital stays that can last up to seven months.

Speaking about the campaign, Reach For A Dream’s Kerry Donkin highlighted the importance of these experiences for children facing serious health challenges.

“Many of our dreamers spend months in hospital, often isolated from their normal lives. These dreams are not just gifts but a vital connection to the outside world and a source of hope during incredibly difficult times,” said Donkin.

Founded in 1988, Reach For A Dream has long been dedicated to fulfilling the dreams of children between the ages of three and 18 who are living with life-threatening illnesses. Referrals are typically received through medical professionals, although members of the public can also submit applications via the organisation’s website.

The foundation relies heavily on corporate donors, fundraising initiatives and a wide network of supporters to continue its work. It costs approximately R36m annually to run the organisation.

The Durban office, based at La Lucia Mall, receives about R500 000 in in-kind support annually.

This year’s campaign places the spotlight firmly on the dreamers themselves, encouraging the public to take part by simply purchasing a campaign sticker and wearing your slippers on May 30.

Available at participating retailers, including Wimpy, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Dis-Chem, Crocs and The Crazy Store, the stickers retail for R20, with proceeds going directly towards fulfilling dreams.

“Just R20 can support a child lying in a hospital bed. It may seem small, but collectively it makes a massive difference. We encourage people to buy more than one sticker and be part of something meaningful,” Donkin added.

The campaign, which launched in mid-April, also includes “spot prizes” linked to sticker purchases, adding an element of excitement for supporters.
