SARS denies social media claims of data breach
The South African Revenue Service says there is no evidence its systems were compromised following social media claims of a data breach.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has denied claims circulating on social media that its systems were breached, saying an internal investigation found no evidence of a cyberattack or compromise of taxpayer data.
In a statement issued on Monday (May 25), SARS said it had conducted a “thorough investigation” after becoming aware of online reports alleging a data breach. The revenue service described the claims as “false and unsubstantiated”.

“At this stage, there is no evidence that SARS’s systems have been compromised,” the agency said, adding that it remained confident in the integrity of its digital infrastructure.
SARS said the protection of taxpayer information and the security of its digital platforms remained a core responsibility as it works to build what it described as a “smart, modern institution with unquestionable integrity”.
The agency urged the public not to share unverified information or rely on unofficial sources, warning that misinformation could fuel panic and create opportunities for scams.
SARS also cautioned taxpayers and traders to remain alert to phishing attempts and fraudulent messages claiming to originate from the revenue service. It encouraged the public to use official communication channels for accurate information and guidance.
The statement comes amid growing concern globally over cyberattacks targeting government institutions and large public databases. SARS said it would continue monitoring its digital environment and communicate any developments through official platforms.
