Residents welcome repair of staircase in uMhlanga

The staircase had been in a state of disrepair for some time with many sections having completely collapsed.

RESIDENTS of uMhlanga have welcomed the repair of a staircase connecting Park Drive and Lagoon Drive.

The staircase, which is a municipal servitude, had been in a state of disrepair for some time with many sections having completely collapsed, leaving those using the pathway in peril of injuring themselves.

There was also concern for the handrail which was loose and rickety.

In April this year, Northglen News highlighted the story and the matter was taken up by Ward 35 councillor Bradley Singh.

Thanks to the eThekwini’s Costal Engineering Department, the staircase has undergone a remarkable transformation with each step filled in and secured.

Work was also done to secure the wooden handrailing which was given a varnish. A new gutter was installed to prevent any subsidence.

Local residents Howard Saul and Brian High said they were ecstatic with the final outcome.

“I have lived her for 14 years and the steps have never looked better. I’m so pleased with the workmanship by the municipality and we are grateful to councillor Singh for driving the issue. It is fantastic to see people using the walkway to get down to Lagoon Drive. For staff and residents this is one of the quickest ways to get down to the beach and road below. There was a bit of uncertainty about whether the repairs would go ahead but now everything has been completed,” Saul said.

Singh said the repairs were paramount to residents’ safety.

“I pushed extremely hard to get this project completed and I’m glad it has come to fruition. The safety of residents is always a priority and we must ensure we also look after our residents who use the staircase going forward. Everyone benefits because they will be able to use the staircase without being injured,” he said.
