According to Marshall Security, its Emergency Dispatch Centre received a request for assistance from Durban North SAPS Crime Prevention members at approximately 17:40 yesterday while officers were pursuing a white Toyota RAV4.

Marshall Security Armed Response officers and members of the company’s Special Operations Team joined the pursuit, which continued towards the M41 and N2 interchange.

During the chase, an exchange of gunfire reportedly took place before the suspect lost control of the vehicle on the M41 westbound near the N2 northbound off-ramp. The vehicle crashed into a roadside barrier, bringing the pursuit to an end.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene and a firearm was recovered.

Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell said the operation highlighted the value of co-operation between law enforcement and private security.

“Our officers responded immediately to SAPS’ request for assistance and worked alongside law enforcement and other security partners throughout the incident. We commend the bravery and professionalism displayed by all members involved in bringing the situation under control,” Powell said.

Members of KZN VIP Protection Services and emergency medical services also responded to assist.

KZN VIP Protection Services spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said multiple security stakeholders were mobilised as the pursuit moved towards the N2.

“This was a co-ordinated response involving SAPS and private security partners. The suspect was successfully apprehended after the vehicle crashed, and all responding teams worked together to ensure the incident was brought to a safe conclusion,” said Naidoo.

The circumstances that led to the pursuit have not yet been confirmed, and the SAPS is continuing its investigation.

The scene was secured by responding teams while police processed the area.
