THE countdown has begun to one of Durban’s biggest literary events, with organisers confirming that the Durban International Book Fair (DIBF) 2026 will take place from August 6 to 10 at the Umhlanga Apart-Hotel.

Held under the theme “WORD! THE BEGINNING…”, the five-day festival promises a vibrant celebration of literature, heritage and storytelling, bringing together authors, publishers, poets and readers from across South Africa and beyond.

As Africa’s only designated UNESCO City of Literature, Durban has built a reputation for nurturing diverse voices and creating spaces where stories can be shared across generations and cultures. This year’s fair aims to build on that legacy by encouraging meaningful conversations, showcasing emerging talent and strengthening connections within the literary community.

Founder and organiser Anivesh Singh said this year’s programme is designed to be inclusive, inspiring and accessible to everyone who believes in the power of books.

“The Durban International Book Fair isn’t just a literary event but a celebration of stories, culture and community. Through our theme, ‘WORD! THE BEGINNING…’, we want to create a space where established and emerging voices can meet, learn from one another and inspire the next generation of readers and writers. We invite everyone to be part of this journey.”

With less than a month before the opening ceremony, organisers have opened applications for public attendance, exhibitor spaces and participation in the fair’s discussion panels and workshop programme. Authors, publishers and members of the public are encouraged to register early as demand is expected to be high.

Among the featured authors at this year’s fair will be Durban-born celebrity chef, television personality and author Yudhika Sujanani, who will present her acclaimed cookbook, Madame Curry.

The book traces the remarkable culinary journey of South Africa’s Indian community, whose ancestors brought with them spices, treasured family recipes and an enduring spirit of resilience.

Madame Curry celebrates the rich heritage of South African Indian cuisine through a collection of recipes that ranges from generous feast dishes to sweets and savouries prepared for religious celebrations, before concluding with comforting family favourites and fragrant, sophisticated bakes that have become part of the country’s shared culinary identity.
