The murder trial involving brothers Ferrel and Darren Govender got underway in the Durban High Court on Tuesday (July 21), with both accused pleading not guilty to the charges against them, including murder, crimen injuria and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH). Darren has been charged with murder only.

Judge Mbuzeni Mathenjwa ruled that only the plea, presented arguments and judgment may be publicised by media unless a formal application is made to the court.

“Media may be present in court, they are restricted to broadcasting only the plea process, arguments presented in court, rulings made by the court, and final judgment in this matter,” he said.

The charges against the brothers stem from the murder of Shailen Singh who was shot dead in uMhlanga in December 2024.

It is alleged that Singh was having an affair with Ferrel’s girlfriend.

In his opening address, State advocate Krishen Shah said the State will traverse the history of the matter and indicated that the trial is expected to be lengthy, with video recordings and forensic evidence.

The trial continues in Durban High Court today (July 22).
