The drive was hosted by the Umhlanga Women’s Association as part of its Nelson Mandela Day 67 Minutes initiative, with donations going towards the organisation’s community kitchen and feeding programmes.

The organisation runs a community kitchen in uMhlanga, providing meals to hundreds of people every weekday. The kitchen is volunteer-run and supported by donors, with the organisation’s wider charitable work focused on assisting underprivileged communities in areas including Phoenix, Tongaat and Verulam.

The association also distributes groceries and clothing and provides counselling as part of its community outreach work.

The food drive gave members of the public an opportunity to contribute in a practical way, with every tin, packet and non-perishable item donated helping the organisation continue its feeding efforts.

Founder and chairperson of the Umhlanga Women’s Association, Praneetha Aniruth, expressed her gratitude to everyone who supported the initiative.

“Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful change begins with simple acts of kindness. Every donation, no matter how big or small, helps us put food on the table for families who need it most.

“We are incredibly grateful to every individual, family and business that contributed to this initiative. Together, we are not only feeding our community but also giving hope, dignity and compassion to those who need it most,” said Aniruth.
