IN recent years the lower end of Old Mill Way (going towards Crusaders) with a sharp bend has become a high accident zone.

The hotspot has seen residents’ boundary walls taken out and near fatalities with many residents calling for speed calming measures.

Ward councillor Heinz de Boer has confirmed to Northglen News that the request for speed humps has been denied because the road did not meet the municipality’s current policy criteria.

Resident Sheetal Cross said they had engaged with the eThekwini Municipality over other possible engineering solutions to the issues.

“There has been reoccurring life and death threatening accidents for years now. We’ve seen drivers losing control, especially at high speeds and under the influence in the early hours of the morning,” she explained.

“We had two vehicles crash into the same property days apart, earlier this year. Physical measures like speed humps or speed tables force drivers to slow down mechanically. We have had several meetings and engagements with the city engineers and department heads. We’ve also requested the municipality repair the vehicle-damaged steel barrier on that bend and re-install the reflective chevrons on it that used to guide or warn drivers about the sharp bend, especially in the early hours of the morning,” she said.
