TWO men will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on August 25 in connection with allegations including human trafficking, kidnapping and sexual offences.

A 65-year-old man appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday on several charges, including trafficking in persons. The KZN Hawks executed a J50 warrant of arrest at the businessman’s upmarket uMhlanga home on Tuesday, August 11.

The businessman’s name has previously been mentioned at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating allegations of corruption within the SAPS and the criminal justice system.

The charges against him include trafficking in persons, sexual assault, procurement of a female to have unlawful carnal intercourse, kidnapping, contravention of the Films and Publications Board Act 65 of 1996, crimen injuria and contravention of the Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020.

The State alleges that between February and March 2022, the complainants were brought to KwaZulu-Natal under false pretences of an employment opportunity. It is further alleged that they were held against their will for purposes of sexual exploitation.

A 48-year-old accused is also facing several charges, including trafficking in persons, procurement of a female to have unlawful carnal intercourse, crimen injuria and contravention of the Cybercrimes Act, among other charges. He handed himself over to Durban North SAPS days after the 65-year-old businessman was arrested.

The men cannot be named at this stage as the charges relate to alleged sexual offences. His identity may only be published once he has pleaded.
