Suspect arrested after Glenashley property damage incident

A Glenashley property damage suspect has been arrested in Virginia Bush, with live ammunition allegedly found in his possession.

A man wanted in connection with a property damage incident in Glenashley was arrested in Virginia Bush on Monday morning (August 17) following a joint effort by Marshall Security officers and Home Hawks Neighbourhood Watch patrollers.

The suspect was allegedly captured on video on July 11 throwing a rock through the window of a property in the area. A criminal case was subsequently opened at Durban North SAPS.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell, the suspect was spotted at about 06:45 on Monday walking along Adelaide Tambo Drive before entering Virginia Bush.

“His description and last known direction of travel were immediately circulated to our Armed Response Officers, who entered the bush in search of him,” Powell said.

Marshall Security officers, assisted by Home Hawks Neighbourhood Watch patrollers, located the suspect inside the bush and apprehended him.

Powell said live ammunition was found in the suspect’s possession during a search.

“He was unable to provide an account for why he was in possession of the live ammunition,” Powell said.

Durban North SAPS was alerted and officers attended the scene before taking the suspect into custody. He was transported to the police station for further investigation and processing.

The suspect is expected to face charges of malicious damage to property and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Powell said the arrest demonstrated the value of co-operation between residents, private security and law enforcement.

“This arrest is a direct result of the community remaining vigilant and continuing to share information,” he said.

He commended the Home Hawks patrollers and Marshall Security officers involved in the arrest, adding that the incident showed what could be achieved when community members and security organisations worked together.
