Durban Cares appeals for help as refugees rebuild
Durban Cares is appealing for donations of food, toiletries, nappies and other essentials to help refugees reintegrate into the Durban community.
DURBAN Cares is appealing for community support as it assists asylum seekers and refugees who have opted to stay behind in Durban and rebuild their lives.
On Tuesday, 274 refugees left Durban from Che Guevara Road for a temporary shelter in Lindela, Gauteng. However, a large number, including women and children who had lived on the pavement outside the Durban Refugee Reception Centre in Umbilo for four months, opted to stay behind and reintegrate into the community.
Durban Cares founder Cathryn Aylett said the non-profit organisation is assisting the refugees with rebuilding their lives and reintegration into the community.
βWe have been supporting the refugees for some time, and continue to do so as they try to work themselves back into the community.

βFor four months they were living on Che Guevara Road, many not working, so it is difficult for them to be able to rent straight way, but they are working towards it.β
Aylett has appealed to the community for donations, saying the organisation needs food, hygiene packs for men and women, nappies and other essential items.
βThe refugees are sheltering in various parts of the city while they look for work. To keep them going they are in need of toiletries like sanitary towels, face cloths, deodorant, lotions, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and bath soap.
βOn Tuesday, the refugees and their belongings were soaked in the rain and some on the children now have a cold. So, we are also appealing for flu and cold medicine as well.β
