Durbanites take a stand against human trafficking

The aim of the Anti-Human Trafficking Awareness Walk in Durban was to raise awareness around human trafficking and gender-based violence.

HUNDREDS of Durbanites took to the Durban Promenade on Saturday for the 13th annual Anti-Human Trafficking Awareness Walk.

The 5km walk started at the Suncoast Lawns with this year’s theme being ‘One Voice. One Fight. To end Human Trafficking’ and was supported by NPO, the Umgeni Community Empowerment Centre (UCEC).

The centre is dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic and gender-based violence, human trafficking and other forms of abuse.

Nicole Daniel, a volunteer board member of UCEC, explained how the funds raised from the event will be used.

“The aim of the walk is to raise awareness around human trafficking and gender-based violence. The funds raised go toward the daily initiatives of UCEC, which involves providing counselling, education on awareness at schools and universities, rehabilitation for victims, networking to provide skills development for victims. The Centre also trains and equips people to sew and sell their goods, as well as daily feeding at our premises, and every week grocery hampers are given to the gogos,” she said.

Daniel added the turnout for the event was encouraging.

“We are very happy to see people get involved in this initiative and take a stand against human trafficking and GBV. We would like to see a much larger number because that would mean we are impacting much more people and educating them on the dangers of human trafficking and GBV.”
