Durban North seniors dance their way to better health
From music spanning the decades to monthly tea gatherings, the fitness group at Mildene Park is helping seniors stay healthy.
DURBAN North seniors are getting into the rhythm of keeping fit with exercise classes now in full swing at Mildene Park every Wednesday.
The classes, led by SA Senior Fitness Association convenor Merle Vallance, bring together a diverse group of seniors for an hour of exercise, socialising and dance from 09:00 to 10:00.
Vallance said the programme started with a small group and has grown to around 16 members.
“The programme is more than just exercising, we also incorporate dance into the routine which gets our members moving and improves their mobility.”

She said one member of the group joined the class unable to bend down to tie their shoelaces and now moves with ease. “The classes are designed for the stimulation of flexibility, cardiovascular strength and to build on general fitness. We play music ranging from the ’60s, ’70s and up to the present day. It improves balance and mental strength, everyone is welcome.
“Our routines are low impact allowing for each member to work out to their level of fitness.”
In addition to the physical benefits, the classes provide an opportunity for socialising. On the last Wednesday of the month, the multicultural group meets for tea, cakes and fun.
For those unable to attend the Wednesday classes at Mildene Park, Vallance said there is an alternative. The group also hold classes on Monday at the Manning Road Methodist Church Hall from 09:00 to 10:00.
“Any senior would thoroughly enjoy this class,” said Vallance.
