Career expo opens doors for Greenwood Park learners

A newly elected community youth desk has launched its first initiative, putting career guidance and youth empowerment in the spotlight.

A CAREER expo hosted by the newly elected Greenwood Park Community Policing Forum (GWP CPF) Subforum 2 Youth Crime Prevention Desk has given 455 learners from five local schools an opportunity to explore their future career paths.

The event, held on Friday, October 9, brought together 34 institutions and exhibitors to provide information about further education, vocational training, skills development and potential career opportunities.

The Youth Desk said the initiative aimed to help learners make informed decisions about their futures by connecting them directly with institutions and training providers. It sought to bridge the information gap and expose learners to the opportunities available after completing school.

“The event was not merely an exhibition of opportunities, but an investment in the future of the community,” said the organisation. “By equipping learners with relevant information and exposing them to different career paths, the initiative aimed to encourage informed decision-making, inspire ambition and help young people recognise their potential.”

The expo marked the newly elected Youth Desk’s first official event and laid the groundwork for future initiatives focused on youth empowerment, crime prevention and community development.

The Youth Desk is chaired by Mesholen Reddy, with Shriya Devnarain serving as vice-chairperson, Kiara Reddy as secretary and Chanel Pillay as public relations officer. Ashlin Ellan serves as executive member for general affairs and special projects.

Other portfolios include head of schools, held by Kavir Kalidin, with Brandon Taksing as deputy head; treasurer Shivalyn Reddy; and environmental affairs representative Luvan Alexander. Disaster management and outreach are collectively managed by the executive committee.

The Youth Desk serves the G.E.A.R. area, comprising Greenwood Park, Effingham, Avoca and Riverhorse Valley. The organisation said the event demonstrated the importance of collaboration, community involvement and purposeful leadership in addressing the needs of young people.

“The initiative also established a strong foundation for future programmes focused on youth empowerment, crime prevention and community development.”

The Youth Desk also highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for young people as part of broader crime-prevention efforts.

“Empowering young people extends beyond preventing crime; it also involves creating access to opportunities, encouraging personal growth and supporting the development of responsible, informed and motivated future leaders,” said the organisation.

The team extended its appreciation to the participating schools, learners, exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers and other stakeholders whose contributions helped make the event possible.

“The successful turnout and positive feedback received from participating stakeholders reflected the value of creating spaces where young people can engage meaningfully with institutions and professionals who can help shape their futures,” said the Youth Desk.
