Copper theft suspects arrested in Kenville and Greenwood Park

Streetlight cables and copper piping were targeted in separate incidents in Kenville and Greenwood Park on Wednesday.

COPPER theft suspects were arrested in Kenville and Greenwood Park following separate incidents involving stolen streetlight cables and copper piping.

Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell said armed response officers apprehended the suspects after a panic alarm activation and CCTV footage shared by a resident helped alert officers to the alleged crimes.

He said a resident in Ken Place, Kenville, had reported seeing a suspect using a bush knife to cut cables from a streetlight pole outside his property. “The suspect fled into nearby bushes when the alarm was activated,” said Powell.

“After a short search, the suspect was located hiding in the bushes and apprehended, with a bush knife found in his possession. Further investigation revealed that the streetlight cables had been cut and damaged.”

In a separate incident, a Greenwood Park resident shared CCTV footage on a WhatsApp Crime Alert Group showing a suspect fleeing her property with stolen copper pipes.

“Armed Response Officers responded and reviewed additional footage, which allegedly showed the suspect forcibly removing approximately four metres of copper piping before fleeing.”

A description of the suspect was obtained and a short while later, they spotted an individual matching the description along Stanhope Place and apprehended him with the stolen copper pipes.
Powell commended the officers for their vigilance and persistence, as well as community members whose information helped lead to the arrests.

He added that both suspects, along with the relevant recovered property, were handed over to the respective South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation and processing.
